Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award

The Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award is presented annually to the American Hockey League's best goaltender. The award winner is chosen by AHL media and players.

The award is named after former AHL Pittsburgh Hornets goaltender Aldege "Baz" Bastien, the first winner (1947–48) and first repeat winner (1948–49) of the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award as goaltender of the AHL team with the lowest goals against average; he later served as general manager of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Baltimore Skipjacks were a minor league professional ice hockey team from Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The Skipjacks originated in 1979, and played as the Baltimore Clippers in the Eastern Hockey League for two seasons. The team was renamed to Skipjacks in 1981, and played the following season in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. The Skipjacks then played eleven seasons as members of the American Hockey League (AHL), from 1982 until 1993. The Skipjacks were one of three AHL teams to have been based in Baltimore, including the Baltimore Clippers, and the Baltimore Bandits. The Skipjacks operated as a farm team to the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals for five seasons each, and were previously a farm team to the Minnesota North Stars for two seasons, the Boston Bruins for one season. The team played its home games at the Baltimore Civic Center, which was renamed to the Baltimore Arena in 1986.

He won the Vezina Trophy for the NHL's best goaltender in 1996. Carey was born in and grew up in Weymouth, Massachusetts.

Joseph Aldège Albert "Baz" Bastien was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender, head coach and general manager. He played five games for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League in 1945, but spent most of his playing career with the Pittsburgh Hornets of the American Hockey League. He later became the Hornets' head coach and general manager, and served in several front office positions with National Hockey League clubs, most notably as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1976 until his death in a car crash in 1983.

The 1983–84 AHL season was the 48th season of the American Hockey League. Thirteen teams played 80 games each in the schedule. The league initiates two new awards. The Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award is first awarded to the league's "best goaltender." The Jack A. Butterfield Trophy is first awarded to the "MVP of the playoffs." The Baltimore Skipjacks finished first overall in the regular season. The Maine Mariners won their third Calder Cup championship.

Sam St. Laurent is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender who played 34 games in the National Hockey League between 1986 and 1990 as well as on the Canadian national men's hockey team. St. Laurent was last NHL goaltender to wear a mask made entirely out of fiberglass.

The 1976–77 Pittsburgh Penguins season was their tenth in the National Hockey League. They finished third in the Norris Division for the third season in a row. In the playoffs, the Penguins were eliminated in the first round. Changes occurred in management and ownership. In December 1976, Baz Bastien replaced Wren Blair as the club's general manager. The club was sold to shopping mall magnate Edward J. DeBartolo, Sr. in February 1977.

Brian Ford is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey goaltender who played eleven games in the National Hockey League with the Quebec Nordiques and Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1983–84 and 1984–85 seasons. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1982 to 1991, was spent in various minor leagues.
